Overview
DignaCare is an innovative solution designed to monitor diaper usage for the elderly using smart sensor technology. Traditionally, incontinence care relies on manual checks, which can be intrusive for patients and inefficient for caregivers. DignaCare utilizes a sensor strip placed on the outside of a diaper to capture humidity and temperature changes. Brain Station 23 partnered with the client to develop the complete software ecosystem—including the backend, mobile app, and web portal—that receives, analyzes, and visualizes this data to notify nurses in real-time.
Business Challenges
-
Inefficient Manual Monitoring: Caregivers had to physically check patients frequently, disturbing their sleep and dignity.
-
Resource Wastage: Diapers were often changed too early (wasting supplies) or too late (causing leakage).
-
Increased Operational Costs: Late changes often resulted in soiled beds and surroundings, increasing laundry frequency and labor efforts.
-
Lack of Actionable Data: Care homes lacked historical data to understand individual patient patterns and optimize care schedules.
-
Hardware-Software Integration: Needed a robust system to reliably translate hardware sensor data into instant, easy-to-understand notifications for nurses.
Solution Provided
- IoT Sensor Ecosystem: Integrated a solution where sensor strips monitor real-time humidity and temperature to detect saturation levels.
- Real-Time Mobile App (Diaper Sens): Built a Flutter-based mobile app that notifies nurses immediately when a patient needs supervision or a change.
- Intuitive Data Visualization: Implemented a color-coded interface for instant status recognition:
- Green: Pure/Dry.
- Yellow: Moisture detected (Started filling).
- Red: Saturated (Ready to be changed).
- White: Sensor Offline.
- Gray: Sensor Not Activated.
- Historical Insights: Each sensor connects to a 48-hour historical graph, allowing caregivers to track patterns over time.
- Centralized Web Portal: Developed a management portal for administrators to oversee all sensors, gateways, and users, and to connect with business partners for resource sharing.
- Scalable Backend: Utilized Azure, .NET, and Node.js to handle the influx of sensor data and ensure reliable delivery of notifications.
Impact
Enhanced Patient Dignity: Reduced unnecessary manual checks and ensured timely changes, improving comfort and hygiene.
Economic Savings: Prevented the overuse of diapers by changing them only when necessary.
Reduced Laundry & Labor: Timely notifications prevented leaks, significantly reducing the need to change bed linens and surroundings.
Remote Monitoring: Enabled nurses to monitor multiple patients simultaneously from their phones, optimizing staff workflow.
Data-Driven Care: Provided care homes with the analytics needed to improve resource allocation and standard of care.
